Eight English Novels Perfect for Jane Austen Fans https://club31women.com/english-novels-perfect-jane-austen-fans/ Thu, 26 Oct 2023 12:00:00 +0000 https://club31women.com/?p=22275 Eight English Novels Perfect for Jane Austen Fans

Looking for some new titles to read? If you’re an Austen fan, perhaps you’ll want to pick up any of the following eight titles, also set on British soil.

One of the books both my husband and I owned when we got married was Pride and Prejudice; I had a paperback and he a hardbound copy! All of Jane Austen’s titles (and even some of the screen adaptations) are considered classic stories by so many who enjoy being transported across the pond and back in time nearly a century to follow the lives of her beloved characters.

If you’re an Austen fan, perhaps you’ll want to pick up any of the following eight titles, also set on British soil.

The Ladies of the Manor Series by Roseanna M. White

This series of three books by Roseanna M. White follows three couples from England to the Highlands and back again. Although my personal favorite was A Lady Unrivaled because I could relate so well to the heroine, I also loved reading The Reluctant Duchess and The Lost Heiress.

This series runs the gamut from a couple who have known each from childhood, an unexpectedly arranged marriage, and a dangerous mystery surrounding a red diamond that weaves all three storylines together.

Great Horse Books to Delight (and Teach!) Your Middle-Grade Reader https://club31women.com/middle-grade-horse-books/ Thu, 28 Sep 2023 00:00:00 +0000 http://club31women.com/?p=20040 Great Horse Books to Delight (and Teach!) Your Middle-Grade Reader

Do you have a middle school girl who loves horses and can’t get enough great horse stories? Here is a list of amazing horse stories to add to her list!

If you have a middle school girl in love with horses, you’ve probably already seen the whole Black Stallion series in her hands. Once a girl catches “horse fever,” she will do almost anything to get her hands on a horse–or books about them.

I know. I’ve been there. Bitten by the bug around age eight, I didn’t get my own until I was fourteen. I begged, borrowed, and weaseled my way into horse rides while devouring every horse book we owned and the ones the library had to offer.

Why should you encourage this in your own daughter? Let me tell you a secret which I never heard as a child.

Horses actually teach us to be better people.

The lessons cover subjects like how to fall and get up again, how to fail but keep trying until you succeed, how to control emotions even when nerves race out of control, how to work as a team with people and horses, and how to trust.

Dreaming of Spring? Here are 11+ Sweet Books to Celebrate a New Season of Growth https://club31women.com/books-for-spring/ Fri, 31 Mar 2023 00:52:00 +0000 https://club31women.com/?p=84867 Dreaming of Spring? Here are 11+ Sweet Books to Celebrate a New Season of Growth

New books for spring are such a fun way to welcome warmer weather and new growth into your reading regime!

Oh, spring! Though I’m hard-pressed to choose between it and autumn, I think that spring nudges ahead by a slim margin as my favorite season. It definitely helps that my birthday is near the end of April, but I also love the green, the new blossoms, and all the growing things. Granted, here at 7000 feet elevation in the mountains of Colorado, all of these signs of coming spring occur much later in the season than a lot of other places! In spite of that, I always remember one of my favorite L. M. Montgomery quotes (from the very end of The Story Girl): “It is always safe to dream of spring. For it is sure to come; and if it be not just as we have pictured it, it will be infinitely sweeter.”

Even with the weather warming up, spring is still the perfect time for some new reads, especially ones that concentrate on the whole idea of new ways of living life and the beauty of growing things. I especially relate the season of spring to a focus on beauty, and several of these books tie into that as well.

Books to Help Your Teens Find Meaning and Courage in the Storms of Life https://club31women.com/books-help-teens-find-courage-life/ Thu, 27 Oct 2022 01:33:00 +0000 https://club31women.com/?p=84104 Books to Help Your Teens Find Meaning and Courage in the Storms of Life

What books can you offer to help your teens find meaning when the storms of life come pounding down on them? What titles can guide them on how to face trials and challenges, how to grow in their faith, and how to find God in the darkness of this world?

I was ten years old when I overheard a conversation between my mother and my older brother that changed my life forever.

They were discussing a book he had just read. While talking about what happened, they expounded on the theological meanings of different things that appeared in the book.

One thing became very clear to me.

I had to read this book myself.

I rode my bike down to the small local library and found it in the historical fiction section. It was heavy in my hands with a plain hardback cover and two words emblazoned across the front of it:

The Robe.

The librarian took one glance at it and refused to let me check it out. “It’s not a children’s book, and you’ll never finish it on time.”

“I’ll ask my parents before I start,” I replied.

Ready for Fall? A stack of good books for cool autumn evenings https://club31women.com/books-for-autumn/ Thu, 20 Oct 2022 01:00:00 +0000 https://club31women.com/?p=84033 Ready for Fall? A stack of good books for cool autumn evenings

As the days get shorter, and we cuddle up under cozy blankets in the evenings, let’s have a stack of books for autumn at our fingertips.

Oh, autumn…how I love thee. Summer is my least favorite season by a large margin, so when the weather starts to cool and the leaves start to change and that briskness starts riding the breezes coming in our open windows, my soul leaps with joy! Though my favorite way to spend an evening year-round is with a large cup of tea and a stack of books for autumn, it just seems to fit better with autumn evenings next to a roaring fire.

As I shared in my summer book list, I have a tendency to read more fiction than non-fiction. However, that is something I’m actively trying to change by incorporating more non-fiction into my TBR stack, so I’ve tried to share both equally here. However, I will admit that in this list, a good portion of the non-fiction are cookbooks, as autumn always seems like the perfect time to bake a bunch of goodies! I’ll start with some of those…

A Great Stack of Books for Autumn

The Farmer’s Daughter Bakes: Cakes, Pies, Crisps and More for Every Fruit on the Farm by Kelsey Siemens

Written by an apple farmer in British Columbia, this book is full of delicious recipes for baked goods that include all sorts of fruits and berries: perfect for the different harvests of autumn (and tuck away the rhubarb and berry recipes for next spring and summer!).
