That we knew full well what we\u2019d be building when we started our lovely morning tradition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in all honesty, it was probably as much due to a love for coffee as it was a love for each other\u2014at least in the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before our wedding day, on most mornings Matt and I would meet over at Java Bay Caf\u00e9 across the street from his apartment to enjoy a strong cup of Pacific Northwest coffee. There we\u2019d talk about our dreams, ideas, fears, concerns, wedding plans, and just about everything else on the planet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it seemed only natural to continue on with the practice once we were married.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And this is why every morning for over thirty years now, Matt and I have started the day by sharing a cup of coffee together.<\/strong> It\u2019s always the same: a pot of French press, fresh-ground medium-roast coffee beans, raw sugar crystals (for me), and cream (also for me), all carried in on a serving tray. It\u2019s our slow and sweet Jacobson tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s what follows the pour that\u2019s my favorite part. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Setting Aside Sacred Time for Friendship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We spend the next thirty minutes to an hour talking together<\/strong>\u2014discussing everything from the creative ways we could remodel the kitchen to current events in the news to quotes from an interesting book or funny movie. And yes, we sooner or later talk over the plans for the day and who is going where or doing what, but we try to keep that to a minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here is what we <em>don\u2019t<\/em> do during our morning coffee<\/strong>: We don\u2019t use this time to solve problems, work out differences, discuss finances, or troubleshoot. That is what business partners do and, although we <em>do <\/em>run a business together, this sacred time is primarily reserved for <em>friendship <\/em>and <em>friendly topics<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Maybe we didn\u2019t start this tradition with a purpose in mind, but over time it\u2019s become one of those secret ingredients for our loving marriage and friendship.<\/strong> And here\u2019s why: If you haven\u2019t noticed or experienced it yourself, it\u2019s far too easy for a married couple\u2014no matter how in love they are on their wedding day\u2014to find themselves operating more and more like coworkers, coparents, or cohabitants over the years. Possibly all three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet while it might be a normal slide and in some ways a necessary one, who gets married with the hope of becoming functional teammates? Personally, I was looking for something more. <strong>I was looking for a lover and a friend, and I\u2019m almost certain you were too.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bakerbookhouse.com\/products\/435951\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/club31women.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Post-Loving-Husband-8-1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84803\" srcset=\"https:\/\/club31women.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Post-Loving-Husband-8-1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/club31women.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Post-Loving-Husband-8-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/club31women.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Post-Loving-Husband-8-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/club31women.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Post-Loving-Husband-8-1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/club31women.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Post-Loving-Husband-8-1-500x500.png 500w, https:\/\/club31women.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Post-Loving-Husband-8-1-560x560.png 560w, https:\/\/club31women.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Post-Loving-Husband-8-1.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Which brings us right back to coffee. Not that you have to drink coffee, but purpose to set aside time (daily, if possible!) to enjoy each other as <em>people<\/em>, not limiting yourselves to \u201cdad and mom\u201d or \u201ccook and cleaner\u201d or even \u201cmanager and chauffeur.\u201d You\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/club31women.com\/unity-marriage\/\">loving companions<\/a> too, remember?
