Navigating the relentless attacks of the devil can be challenging, especially when it comes to the battleground of our self-\u00adworth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guilt vs Shame<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In my work as a therapist, I often emphasize the crucial distinction between guilt and shame. Guilt addresses our behavior; its primary purpose is to convict and motivate us to positive change. Shame unfairly condemns us as a person, and its purpose is to accuse and point fingers at us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guilt says, \u201cI failed at something.\u201d Shame maliciously whispers, \u201cI am a failure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guilt admits, \u201cI made a mistake.\u201d Shame harshly declares, \u201cI am a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day, in my office, I began explaining the difference between guilt and shame to a client. I started writing the word \u201cshame\u201d on the large whiteboard mounted in the middle of my wall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I began to write, I paused when I realized the first two letters of \u201cshame\u201d are S-\u00adH, which sounds like \u201cShh!\u201d That\u2019s what we say when we want to keep something hidden or don\u2019t want our words to be heard by others. \u201cShh! Don\u2019t tell anybody I told you this!\u201d \u201cShh! Keep this a secret!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It dawned on me how that is the exact same thing the devil whispers to us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shame Is a Sham<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As I continued to spell out the word \u201cshame\u201d on my whiteboard, I paused once more when I came to the fourth letter: S-\u00adH-\u00adA-\u00adM. The letters staring back at me now spelled sham. <\/em>Sham describes something that is false or not genuine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The devil\u2019s specialty is knowing just when and how to hit below the belt. In Revelation 12:10, he is called \u201cthe accuser.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the truth of God\u2019s Word dismantles the devil\u2019s deceit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the devil says, \u201cYou\u2019re worthless!\u201d God\u2019s Word says, \u201cYou were bought with a price!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. (1\u00a0Cor. 6:20 NLT)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The devil is not only full of lies, he is the father of lies!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[The devil] was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44 NLT)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Satan Attacks Your Self-\u00adWorth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One other way the devil tightens his grip on us is by sucking us into the shame-comparison trap. We begin to measure our value against others and what we see in the highlight reels of social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our self-\u00adworth comes under attack when we either hear from others or tell ourselves messages that we aren\u2019t [fill in the blank] enough:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou aren\u2019t smart enough!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou aren\u2019t pretty enough!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou aren\u2019t good enough!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stop! Comparing yourself to others will only steal your joy<\/a>.<\/strong> It makes you want what others have (or what you think they have) and plants seeds of discontent in your mind. You begin to believe the lie that God has favorites and you aren\u2019t one of them. You tell yourself that all you are worthy of is God\u2019s \u201cleftover\u201d love. Let me reassure you that there is no such thing. God\u2019s Word says He is \u201crich in love\u201d (Ps. 145:8).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

How has shame affected you in your life? Would you say you usually feel more guilt or shame after you make a mistake?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you find yourself leaning toward feeling shame more often than guilt, try re-framing the narrative you are telling yourself, with God\u2019s help. Make a list of things God calls you and repeat them to yourself (for example: beloved daughter, chosen child of God.)<\/p>\n\n\n
