We\u2019ve all heard the lie<\/em> that God won\u2019t give us more than we can handle. But Scripture tells a different story\u2014one of surrender and divine strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

When I was about thirty weeks pregnant with my daughter, Olivia, I was hospitalized because of a \u201csmall baby and crappy placenta,\u201d per the astutely medically accurate description by my doctor. It was my first pregnancy, and really, I had never thought of myself as the mothering type. Some little girls dream of being a mommy\u2014I aspired to be on American Idol<\/em> or training dolphins at SeaWorld. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever been at an appointment where you just know<\/em> you\u2019re about to hear bad news? It starts with a look or a too-\u00adpregnant pause, and someone who \u201cisn\u2019t allowed\u201d to tell you more tells you all you need to know with avoidant eye contact and a \u201cLet me get the doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The doctor looked at me with such empathy\u2014as if he was a seasoned pro at telling women they or their baby may not make it to tomorrow. \u201cErica, you\u2019re sicker than you feel. You\u2019re at extremely high risk right now of a stroke, a seizure, or both. And at this point, we\u2019re more concerned about your health than the baby\u2019s. If we wait, the baby might be okay .\u00a0.\u00a0. but you might not be.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 2:34 p.m. on October 17, 2018, Olivia Grace was born via emergency C-\u00adsection. She weighed 3 pounds, 0.1 ounce, and she looked like a little alien as they whisked her off to the NICU. I couldn\u2019t see her, I couldn\u2019t hold her, I couldn\u2019t feed her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was more than I could handle. Really, I wasn\u2019t \u201chandling\u201d anything\u2014I was barely surviving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There Will Be Suffering in a Fallen World<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

God is not in the business of keeping us comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While \u201cGod won\u2019t give you more than you can handle\u201d is often said as a means of encouragement and affirmation, the phrase can feel so discouraging when we feel disconnected from it\u2014\u00adwhen we find ourselves in uncharted waters without a map or a lifeboat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternatively, this saying is used at the wrong time, implying the wrong thing\u2014\u00adas if God \u201cgave\u201d a child leukemia or killed somebody\u2019s grandma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s be very clear: Horrible things happen. But horrible things happen not because there\u2019s a vindictive, merciless supreme being in the sky handing out hardships like hard candies from the office bowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horrible things happen because we are broken people with free will in a fallen world. Full stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tragedies aside, we\u2019re likely also familiar with feeling like we\u2019ve been unexpectedly thrown in the deep end on a Tuesday\u2014\u00adlike life is going grand until it isn\u2019t, and what once felt swimmable suddenly threatens to pull you under.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGod won\u2019t ever give you more than you can handle.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s safe, it\u2019s comforting, it\u2019s self-\u00adaffirming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also a lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lie Beneath the Lie<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whoop, there it is! Did you, like me, grow up thinking this just must<\/em> be in the Bible because enough people said it was? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the contrary, we\u2019re promised the opposite\u2014we\u2019re told straight up that in this life we\u2019ll suffer (John 16:33). But our suffering can be sanctifying\u2014a beautiful invitation to bring the light of Christ into our darkest places so that in communion with<\/em> him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes God gives us more\u2014way more\u2014than we can realistically, humanly handle because he needs us to lift our hands to him and say, \u201cFather, help me<\/em>.\u201d Had someone told me Olivia\u2019s birth story in advance, I wouldn\u2019t have believed I could handle any of it\u2014the stress, the pain, the grief. The anxiety of not having answers, the physical toll of being on the brink of seizure and stroke while also experiencing childbirth, the grief of losing a romanticized delivery and needing a rewrite in real time with the ending TBD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was more than I could handle. In this life, you will be given things you actually can\u2019t handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will feel overwhelmed, discouraged\u2014\u00admaybe even completely desperate and desolate. But you will never have to handle them alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
