Heather and Picket’s idyllic life in Nick Hollow is suddenly shattered when a pack of wolves brings death and destruction into the quiet meadow. Their cozy rabbit den is burned; Mother, Father, and little Jacks are taken prisoner or worse, and Heather and Picket flee for their lives. When the ravening wolves corner the brother and sister in a tiny cave, an unexpected appearance changes everything. Now they must discover who they really are and find their calling in the midst of the rising cloud of darkness.

The rabbits of The Green Ember, endowed with human personality, struggle with coming of age issues in a cataclysmic setting of destruction, flight, and war. Courage, honesty, loyalty, and common sense are virtues to be discovered and practiced by the two nicely developed protagonists. The Green Ember has many favorable parallels to Brian Jaques’ Red Wall Series and is just as entertaining. A great find for younger readers.
